QLD: Bligh clears in-tray for poll day
By Paul Osborne
BRISBANE, Feb 19 AAP - Anna Bligh is edging closer to completing her to-do list.
There are only a handful of tasks left before the Queensland premier calls an early
election, expected on March 28.
The key task is to convince voters of the need for an early election, after many months
of the premier insisting she wants to go full-term.
The global economic crisis, and its ongoing impact on Queensland, is likely to be used
as the excuse not to hold a poll when it is due in September.
The premier has made securing jobs her mantra and will argue that she needs a mandate
now to maintain stability of government and see Queensland through the tough times ahead.
The certainty of an incumbent government, with 11 years of experience behind it, will
be contrasted with a leap into the unknown under the Liberal National Party (LNP).
But the LNP has consistently argued the government has wasted a decade of good economic
times, put the state into $65 billion debt, and can no longer be trusted to manage the
books.
Treasury boffins are working on a revised budget, expected to be released on the eve
of the election being called.
While it is likely most indicators including unemployment and growth have weakened,
the long-term figures will also include a welcome injection of $8.3 billion from the Rudd
government's stimulus package - including $4.4 billion for infrastructure.
The Queensland government has listed $800 million in projects to start immediately
this financial year, including schools, social housing and road and rail projects.
This will deliver plenty of announcements for an election campaign.
Another issue on the to-do list is renewal within the Labor Party.
Eight Labor MPs have signalled they will not run again, allowing the much-needed injection
of new blood sought by the premier.
Ms Bligh's diary also includes another week of parliament, in which the government
will ram through its charter of budget honesty - a bill to ensure all election promises
can be independently checked by Treasury.
It could also be expected that much mention will be made of the government's environmental
credentials - crucial to securing Greens preferences - and changes to make it more accountable,
including a lobbyists code of conduct and new rules for former public servants and ministers
entering the private sector.
Lastly, government advertising is expected to be ramped up over the coming week as
the premier aims to counter a number of spot-fire issues.
These include unrest over centralising Brisbane's children's hospital on the southside,
uncertainty over job prospects, and concerns over botched flood relief efforts in the
state's north.
Labor is already road-testing key election themes and points of attack.
In one ad, LNP leader Lawrence Springborg is shown - in a classic example of Joh-speak
- to bumble through a media doorstop, saying he would save taxpayers' money by "front-ending"
public sector jobs and making others "denecessary".
And the premier has launched her own website www.anna4qld.com.au to interact with voters
and get her message out.
A quick look at the LNP's main website, www.springborg.com, gives a taste of where
the opposition's priorities lie.
Trimming the fat in public sector spending, plans to "climate proof" the state, crack
down on "hoons" and provide schools with "smaller classes, better results and greater
parental involvement" feature in the LNP's election platform.
With the campaigns test-run and the in-tray emptied, the only thing left for the premier
to do is make the drive to Government House.

PORTLAND --
A Biddeford man who is serving a 22-month jail sentence for violating a protection-from-abuse order faces as much as five years in federal prison on new charges of stalking and stealing the identity of his ex-girlfriend.
Shawn Sayer, 41, was arraigned in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. He is accused of using the Internet to harass his ex-girlfriend to the point where she feared death or serious injury, and of pretending online to be her, inviting men to her home for sexual encounters.
Sayer negotiated a plea agreement on the state charges, pleading guilty to violating bail conditions and two counts of violating a protection-from-abuse order.
But because his alleged harassment crossed state lines, as the woman moved to Louisiana to escape him, it can also be prosecuted as a federal crime.
The case was investigated initially by Detective Laurie Northrup of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit. Secret Service Agent Matthew Fasulo, assigned to the agency's Portland office, investigated the federal case.
A court affidavit filed by Fasulo says that Sayer and his ex- girlfriend dated from 2003 to 2006, and that he stalked her in the years after that.
He was convicted of stalking in 2006 in York County Superior Court.
The harassment continued and escalated, Fasulo said in the affidavit.
In 2008, a man arrived at the woman's house, believing that he had met her on the Internet and that she had invited him there for sex. Several more men came to the house in the following days, the federal complaint says.
Online personas created by Sayer showed provocative pictures of his ex-girlfriend, taken when they were still together, the complaint says.
Sayer also posted online videos of the two of them having sex, taken consensually when they were still together, the complaint says.
The woman moved from Maine to Louisiana in May of 2009 and changed her name, but Sayer eventually found her.
In August of 2009, a man arrived at her house saying he had seen the woman on an adult website that showed directions to her home. More men followed.
Unable to persuade police to investigate the case, the woman wrote to the Attorney General's Office, which forwarded the case to the Computer Crimes Unit.
The unit gathered information about the Internet address that was used when some of the online accounts were created, and tracked the address to a home on Marion Avenue in Biddeford, whose owner used an unsecured wireless network.
Sayer lived with his father across the street from the home and accessed the wireless signal, police said.
Investigators did a search in November 2009, but Sayer told them he had disposed of the computer hard drives before they arrived.
Fake profiles for the woman continued to appear on social networking sites, and in July 2010 investigators searched again and seized two computers showing many fake email accounts set up under the woman's name, the complaint says.
Stalking and identity theft are felonies punishable by $250,000 fines and as much as five years in prison, followed by three years of probation.
The case is scheduled to go to trial Sept. 6.

FED:Loan demand could suffer awaiting reforms
By Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics Correspondent
CANBERRA, Dec 13 AAP - Economists are concerned that home lending faces a downturn
as buyers wait for the federal government's new banking laws to be enacted, particularly
the abolition of mortgage exit fees.
They already expect lending to soften over the next few months as a result of the round
of interest rate rises in November that saw variable home-loan rates jump by 40 basis
points on average.
Among Treasurer Wayne Swan's suite of measures to help increase banking competition
announced on Sunday was the axing of all exit fees on home loans taken out from July 1,
2011.
"There is simply no justification for any lender to have a mortgage exit fee, say,
of the order of $7000," Mr Swan told ABC radio on Monday.
"Whether you're a smaller lender or a larger lender, that is absolutely unfair and
it can't be tolerated."
But opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey said while getting rid of exit fees sounds
great for consumers, he believes they will be hit in other ways.
"What you will see is higher maintenance fees, higher application fees, because unless
the banks are prepared to cut back on their profits they are not going to willingly accept
a fee being abolished and not replacing income with something else," he told Melbourne's
MTR radio.
Legislation for Mr Swan's package - which also aims to prevent price signalling between
banks and opens up new types of funding for lending institutions to enable better access
to money - will be put forward to parliament next year after consultations with the industry.
In the meantime, Nomura Australia chief economist Stephen Roberts believes it could
make existing homeowners and first-time buyers think twice about a new home loan as they
wait for exit fees to be dropped.
"It suddenly makes what should be two identical products somewhat different," Mr Roberts
told AAP.
"That can have the effect of influencing demand for new products relative to sitting
on the existing products."
Macquarie Research senior economist Brian Redican agreed that there will be a considerable
incentive to wait a couple of months, not only because of the end of exit fees but also
because of the promise of better deals.
He said that could also dampen house prices as demand slackens.
"In that kind of environment, you are better off waiting before putting your house
on the market," Mr Redican told AAP.
Government data last week showed first-time buyers remained reluctant to enter the
market even before the November rate rise, making up just over 15 per cent of loans granted
in October, the smallest amount since July 2004.
Still, despite the government's efforts to make the banking industry more competitive,
Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens believes there is more competition now than there
was in the mid-1990s.
"The overall availability of finance to purchase housing in particular seems to be
adequate," he told a Senate inquiry into banking competition in Sydney on Monday.
Mr Stevens said he had a brief consultation with the treasurer's department about the
reforms but refused to comment on the measures.
"I don't really want to offer a comprehensive response to it," he told the inquiry.

Fed: War of words breaks out over binge drinking
A war of words has erupted after federal Health Minister NICOLA ROXON accused the former

Ms ROXON claims a decision in 2000 to cut excise on premixed has helped fuel the surge
in excessive drinking by young people .. particularly girls.
A furious opposition Leader BRENDAN NELSON has branded the claim an outrageous slur.
Dr NELSON says the coalition supported the rise in the excise and denies the move
is to blame for binge drinking.
He says the former government responsibly put excise and taxes on alcoholic drinks
to make sure that they didn't reduce in price.
A bottle of the sugary alco-pops are now up to one dollar thirty more expensive following
the Rudd government's decision to lift the excise by 70 per cent in a bid to tackle binge

Qld: Public supports regulation of cosmetic surgery for teens
BRISBANE, Dec 23 AAP - Queensland is a step closer to becoming the first Australian
state to regulate cosmetic surgery among teenagers after overwhelming public support for
the move.
In October Premier Anna Bligh released a discussion paper on the subject, due to anecdotal
evidence suggesting cosmetic procedures such as nose jobs and breast enhancements were
widely sought and received among teens.
The majority of the 290 public submissions received since the paper's release are in
favour of regulating cosmetic surgery, as well as the use of solariums by teenagers, Ms
Bligh said today.
"Ninety-five per cent called for more regulation of cosmetic surgery by people under
18 years and 96 per cent supported restrictions on minors using solariums," she said in
a statement.
"The overwhelming community support is generally in line with the views of key stakeholders
such as surgeons and the Cancer Council, who have been individually consulted."
Health Minister Stephen Robertson said he would present regulatory options for cosmetic
surgery and solarium use to cabinet next year.
"We don't want to become a nanny state, but anecdotal evidence of huge increases in
breast implants, nose jobs and tummy tucks amongst teenagers is alarming," Mr Robertson
said.
"I'm not against these procedures to correct deformities or negate any medical or psychological
impact caused by specific body features, but major surgery for purely cosmetic reasons
for youngsters must be questioned."
No Australian state or territory directly regulates the provision of cosmetic surgery to minors.
Victoria recently passed laws making it illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to use
a solarium, and that 16- and 17-year-olds only be able to use a solarium with parental
consent.
A meeting of Australian health ministers next year will consider the development of
nationally consistent regulation of solariums.

Fed: Council amalgamation laws rushed into parliament
By Maria Hawthorne, Peter Jean and Jane Bunce
CANBERRA, Aug 16 AAP - Emergency laws to overturn Queensland Premier Peter Beattie's
ban on councils holding votes on forced amalgamations have been rushed into federal parliament.
Prime Minister John Howard announced the laws this morning after they were endorsed
by a special meeting of government MPs.
Federal Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd has promised Labor's support amid fears the deeply
unpopular amalgamations will hurt Labor at this year's federal election.
Mr Beattie immediately threatened a High Court challenge and accused Mr Howard of giving
false hope to amalgamation opponents.
But Mr Howard said the only way Mr Beattie could delay the referenda was if he obtained
a court injunction.
The federal changes will not stop any amalgamations going ahead.
But they will give local communities a say on whether they agree with the mergers by
striking out a ban on councils taking part in votes which was pushed through Queensland
parliament last week.
"I'm not going to say that this or that council merger should not take place," Mr Howard
told reporters.
"But I am going to say on such a fundamental principle, it is outrageous for the state
government to punish people for wanting to express a view.
"And we're using the limit of our constitutional power to prevent that occurring."
Under the changes, the commonwealth electoral roll could be used for the referenda
if the Queensland government refuses to make the state roll available.
And state laws allowing councils to be sacked for taking part in a vote would be overturned.
"Nothing the prime minister has announced today will make a difference to the much-needed
reform of local government in Queensland," Mr Beattie said.
"The prime minister is making a lot of noise but at the end of the day he's playing
tricks on people."
Mr Howard accused Mr Beattie of acting in an "arbitrary, jackbooted fashion" and promised
to federally fund any referenda.
He refused to say whether he thought the referenda should be held on the same day as
the coming federal election, the date for which has not been announced.
Mr Rudd said he had disagreed with the forced amalgamations for the past three months.
"Way back in May I went and saw Mr Beattie face to face and said `Peter I don't this
is the right way to go', I think it's wrong for a number of reasons and here they are
and I'll be indicating this publicly tomorrow unless you're going to change your approach',"
Mr Rudd told reporters.
He denied that his failure to talk Mr Beattie out of going ahead meant that he would
be unable to rein in the states if he became prime minister.
"I've not for the life of me ever indicated that it is going to be all sweetness and
roses if I become the next prime minister of Australia in terms of my dealings with the
states," he said.

Qld: Tragedy won't hurt campaign, says Flegg
By Laine Clark
BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - Acting Queensland Coalition leader Bruce Flegg believes Lawrence
Springborg's absence due to a family tragedy will have no "political ramifications" for
the September 9 election campaign.
Mr Springborg abruptly ended campaigning in Cairns yesterday to console his wife Linda
over the sudden death in Ipswich of her father, Ernest Kullrich.
The Queensland Nationals leader will remain with his family, including his four young
children, on their property at Yelarbon, south-west of Brisbane, until Saturday.
He will then officially launch the Coalition's campaign in Brisbane on Sunday, alongside
Prime Minister John Howard.
"I don't think this tragedy should be interpreted in terms of any political consequences,"
Dr Flegg said today.
"Clearly this is a short interruption to Lawrence being able to attend to his campaign
commitments.
"Myself and (Nationals Deputy Leader) Jeff Seeney will ensure the campaign commitments
are all met.
"I don't think there will be any political ramifications for it. This is a personal tragedy."
Dr Flegg said the Coalition was due to launch a "negative campaign" against Labor today
but postponed it for 24 hours out of respect for Mr Springborg's loss.
Premier Peter Beattie adhered to Dr Flegg's suggestion that negative Labor TV ads criticising
Mr Springborg be suspended for 24 hours.
"This is a mark of respect for a tragedy that nobody has any control over, that could
hit any one of us at any time," Dr Flegg said.
"It's a bit like the First World War, where you come on Christmas Day and you hop out
of the trenches and you treat each other with the respect that Christmas Day deserves.
"It's a very positive thing that has been done today."
The death of his 77-year-old father-in-law follows the death of Mr Springborg's father
earlier this year.
Mr Springborg suffered the loss of his close friend and senior media adviser Greg Jackson
in 2004 to suicide.
Dr Flegg said Mr Springborg was holding up as well as could be expected.
"Clearly this sort of event would shake any family," he said.
"(But) this is not the first tragedy they have had to face together this year.
"It transcends any political event of the day. Lawrence's first concern was for his
wife and kids.
"Lawrence is committed to his role as Opposition and Coalition leader.
"He is a strong, resourceful person but he is a caring family man - it is going to shake you up."
Meanwhile, Mr Seeney said at Yeppoon today that Mr Springborg was "undoubtedly" the
Queensland Nationals' best campaigner but did not expect the Coalition leader's absence
to dramatically effect their campaign.
"We are certainly not a one-man band in the National Party," he told ABC Radio.
"We will miss Lawrence for a couple of days. He is undoubtedly the best campaigner we have.
"However, we have a very strong team that will adjust their campaigns today and tomorrow
to ensure that our campaign will continue and we will ensure that the job gets done in
Lawrence's absence."

Finding her voice; Naperville singer gets a chance to be Scandelle Us
Jillian Macuda and Stefanie Berecz primp for a photo shoot to promote Scandelle Us.Jillian Macuda talks with Stefanie Berecz before a recent show at Tommy's Place on Chicago's South Side. The women, along with Tiffany Turner, are members of the group Scandelle Us, which has a compact disc available online.Jillian Macuda, right, gets a hug from fellow Scandelle Us singer Tiffany Turner before a recent show. The singing group has gained a strong following in the Chicago area.Tiffany Turner, from left, Jillian Macuda and Stefanie Berecz sing on stage during a recent weekend performance.
One never knows when or where that big break will come. For aspiring singer and dancer Jillian Macuda, her shot at what she hopes will be the big time originated from a list of audition opportunities on an Internet site she saw in early December. In a few, generalized lines, the ad sought a female singer, age 18 to 20, with a strong commercial voice and appearance and contemporary dancing skills, extensive performing experience preferred.
That description fit the 19-year-old Naperville woman to a T. For as long as she could remember, Macuda wanted to be a professional singer. Her background already included performances with Young Naperville Singers, a children's theater company, and voice and piano lessons. A 2001 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School, she had starring roles in school plays and was a member of the pompon squad and dance team. Last summer she performed in a musical review at Six Flags Great America.
After submitting the requisite photograph and resume, she was called in to audition for Scandelle Us, a 2-year-old singing group described as J.Lo meets Destiny's Child. The trio's music is a mix of hip-hop, pop, rhythm and blues, dance, rap and Latin.
She met Scandelle Us' manager, William Messner, on Dec. 7 in his Forest Park studio and bowled him over with her rendition of Christina Aguilera's "Come on Over Baby." The next day Messner called and offered her the job.
"I was so excited," said Macuda, a sophomore at North Central College. "I've always done musical theater and all that, but my dream since I've been little was to be a recording artist. It was a dream come true."
She replaced Amy O'Meara, who left the group in the fall. Macuda immediately got to work memorizing the lyrics to the songs. Within two days, she was in the studio overdubbing the voice of her predecessor. A week later, she was learning dance steps and recording additional songs with the other members of the group, Chicagoans Stefanie "Stefie B" Berecz, 18, and Tiffany "Hot T" Turner, 21. By the end of December, she made her Scandelle Us debut at It Kicks, a dance club in West Allis, Wis.
On stage, Macuda has been nicknamed "Crazy J." But what she is most crazy about is her chance to be part of a group that is developing a strong following in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. The girls have been booked solid for months, playing as many as three venues almost every weekend. They rehearse six days a week. Messner said, their 19-track CD, available online, has been a steady seller.
Last Saturday, all their hard work paid off, when Scandelle Us won the Chicago Music Awards Best New Entertainer award, run by Chicago-based Martin's Inter-Culture Ltd. The group also had been nominated for Pop Entertainer of the Year in the contest, in which the public, over the last 22 years, has bestowed honors on performers as diverse as R. Kelly, Smashing Pumpkins and Sir Georg Solti. To top it off, they were asked to perform at the awards ceremonies, held at the Chicago Renaissance Hotel.
"I really like making this a big priority," said Macuda, who has temporarily put her studies at North Central College on hold. "It's something I love to do. I don't mind putting in the time. It's not a chore for me. I have the drive to do it."
That's what Messner likes in his artists -- the willingness to learn and to sacrifice for their craft. He is looking for the kind of people who aren't happy unless they are on stage.
"You work when other people play, that's your job," he told the girls. "And you work when other people work, so you are prepared to work when they play. It's very physical and extremely competitive. You have to immerse yourself in this, body and soul."
Although he likes to remain in the background, Messner is at the forefront of the group's success. He has been in the business of putting together young talent for more than 30 years. He conceived the idea for the all-girl group more than two years ago and auditioned more than 120 hopefuls. The trio has become his primary focus.
Before Macuda came on board, the group had already performed at the United Center, where its songs are played over the public-address system at Chicago Bulls home games. The girls also had sung the national anthem for Chicago White Sox and Chicago Rush games. They have been the opening act for such performers as Mary J. Blige, Big Daddy Kane, B2K, Stevie B, TKA, Jay-Z and Roc-a-feller.
By design, Messner's singers are as varied as their repertoire. Macuda is white, Turner is black and Berecz is Hispanic. But each holds her own when it's her turn to sing lead, back-up or rap.
Messner said Macuda is a team player who works hard and respects the skills and abilities of the two girls who share the stage with her.
"It's been a real joy working with her," he said. "She not only has all the talent which many young artists have, but beyond that, which is usually lacking in artists, is an extraordinary work ethic. Her willingness to work on her own and prepare for the next day's work and come in totally prepared is exceptional. That's the artist you want to invest your time and efforts in because they are going to make it."
The other two performers said they are happy to have Macuda on board.
"I think Jillian is great," Turner said. "For a person to learn (in a short time) what it took us two years to learn, that is an accomplishment. Our stage presence and show is stronger because of her and what she is bringing into the group."
Berecz agrees that Macuda is a perfect fit for Scandelle Us.
"That was something we were scared about," Berecz said. "She's just been heaven-sent this whole six-week period. She's totally stepped up to the plate. She's a pro."
Among her biggest fans back home in Naperville are her parents, Walter and Marjorie Macuda, who watched their only child's talents begin to blossom in their living room. They encouraged her to pursue her love of singing and chauffeured her to music lessons and play rehearsals. Messner invited them to accompany their daughter on her audition for Scandelle Us.
"This is something she's wanted to do for some time," Walter Macuda said. "We are very proud. We hope that her success continues. It validates that she does have talent. It's good to see that verified. She'll go as far as her determination takes her."
John DeGroot, music teacher at Waubonsie Valley, isn't surprised at Macuda's success. He remembers his former student as a "showstopper" during her four years at the high school.
"She's an incredible talent," he said. "She had it all -- a great dancer and wonderful singer. Her Adelaide performance in `Guys and Dolls' brought the house down. She was just phenomenal in that show."
Macuda is continuing to acclimate herself to the group, throwing herself full time into her new role. Most of her days are filled with rehearsals, voice classes and workouts with a trainer to stay fit. There is a strong athletic component to the act, she said. Refusing to lip-synch any of their songs, the girls need to build the stamina to be able to sing and dance at the same time.
While often physically drained after these shows, Macuda said she is glad to be on stage, doing what she loves best.
"Performing gives you this rush you can't get from anything else," she said. "I love seeing other people enjoying what you do. It makes you feel good about all the hard work you put into something. I'm so blessed. I'm my happiest when I'm performing. I hope to be doing it forever."

Drop In Oil Prices Would Mean Big Losses For 2002 Mexican Budget.
MEXICO CITY, Nov 23, 2001
For every dollar that the Mexican government lowers its estimated price of oil for 2002, the government will give up 666 million dollars, or 6.728 billion pesos, in expected revenues, reported Mexico City daily el Universal. This is double the amount that would be collected next year through the taxation of alcoholic drinks. Under the current budget plan, the Mexican blend of crude will average 17 dollars, and the country will export an average of 1.825 million barrels per day. Analysts say that both the price and volume estimates are optimistic. The current price of Mexican crude is close to 13.30 dollars, and average daily exports between January and September were 1.714 million barrels per day.

New Low Cost, High Performance Wireless Bridge From Wave Wireless Networking.
SARASOTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--Wave Wireless Networking, SPEEDCOM International's wireless Internet division, announced the addition of a new, low-cost wireless bridge to the award winning SPEEDLAN family of wireless products. SPEEDLAN XE-2 provides network administrators and Internet Service Providers (ISP) with the ability to connect buildings across the street or across town without the need for a leased line from the telephone company. Companies can now control their own inter-building communications links without the headache of recurring expenses or long term contracts.
With a range of up to 25 miles, SPEEDLAN XE-2 provides many features common to more expensive wireless bridges but at a much lower cost. Unlike many products on the market today, advanced MAC layer filtering, IP Routing, data encryption and SNMP management are all included as standard features.
SPEEDLAN XE-2 supports everything from simple point-to-point connections to more complex point-to-multipoint operations. Configured as a Base Station, the XE-2 can support up to 16 remote locations. This single, self-contained unit can easily integrate into almost any network environment in just one afternoon.
The SPEEDLAN XE-2 is compatible with all IEEE 802.3 and 802.2 LAN devices, all computer platforms and operating systems, and is completely transparent to the network operating system. More than just a simple MAC layer bridge, SPEEDLAN XE-2 provides advanced traffic and IP routing capabilities. By filtering traffic based on MAC address or Ethernet protocol type, network administrators can optimize their inter-building communications and help maintain network security.
The SPEEDLAN XE-2 utilizes the FCC license-free 2.4GHz frequency band. Providing 2 Mbps of bandwidth, its radio utilizes Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology. This technology, originally developed by the US military for secure transmissions of their own wireless data, allows the SPEEDLAN XE-2 to send data over a broad frequency range rather than a single frequency. Transparent to the end-user, DSSS allows the SPEEDLAN XE-2 to provide highly secure and reliable communications.
SPEEDLAN XE-2 Product Line will be competitively priced at (per end): SPEEDLAN XE-2P Point-to-Point ($2900), SPEEDLAN XE-2B Wireless Base Station ($3500), and SPEEDLAN XE-2S Satellite Unit ($2900).
All SPEEDLAN XE-2 products ship with a full installation kit including: high-gain antenna, low-loss antenna cable, lightning arrestor, mounting brackets, and accessory items.

EXP-Hazox Releases Web-based MSDS Solution with Launch of June Giveaway Promotion.
Somerset, NJ (PRWEB) June 07, 2011
EXP-Hazox announced the release of a web-based version of their Hazox(R) regulatory document authoring & management solution. The latest generation of Hazox(R) (version 5.0) is the culmination of a multi-year reengineering effort, resulting in the most extensive rewrite the application has seen since its initial launch in 1983. The announcement coincides with the launch of HazoxGiveaway.com- a bold online promotion offering the base module of the Hazox(R) web solution for free to new customers throughout the month of June.
By migrating Hazox(R) to a web-enabled platform, version 5.0 has a number of inherent advantages over previous generations. The web application requires no new software installation on individual users' computers nor a complex "roll out" procedure to deploy; a standard internet browser is all that is needed. As a result, Hazox(R) v5.0 can be deployed in a fraction of the time, effort and cost of traditional client/server installations. Moreover, the ubiquity of browsers on nearly every modern computer greatly increases users' access to Hazox(R) within an organization.
With a renewed focus on efficiency, the web-application generates documents much faster than its predecessors. The user-interface has been reworked and streamlined, yielding considerable improvements navigating the application through various areas of functionality. Hazox(R) v5.0 is less "click-intensive", offering more efficient access to any given record's related data. -- For example, it's now possible to view all documents for one product using just one click.
Perhaps the most powerful advantage of the migration to a web-based platform is that Hazox(R) now shares the same architecture with all other EXP-Hazox solutions. As a result, Hazox(R) v5.0 can be deployed in combination with any of the twelve other major applications in the EXPVision suite under a unified interface.
The web-based Hazox(R) solution is an important step toward diversifying EXP-Hazox offerings as a provider of MSDS authoring & management solutions. Access to Hazox(R) v5.0 will soon be offered on a subscription basis using the SaaS (Software as a Service) model, currently available on other EXP-Hazox systems. Please contact EXP-Hazox for more details or to request a demo of the web-based Hazox(R) solution.

Research and Markets: Hong Kong Information Technology Report Q1 2011 - Out Now!(Report)
DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/d7e55a/hong_kong_informat) has announced the addition of the "Hong Kong Information Technology Report Q1 2011" report to their offering.
The Hong Kong IT market is forecast by BMI to grow from around US$4.9bn in 2011 to US$6.1bn in 2015. Computer sales were strong in 2010, with robust retail sales leading the way as the economy recorded positive growth. The government sector was expected to be a key driver, thanks to a new IT plan, and there should also be growing interest from Hong Kong companies in cloud computing solutions. IT market growth is forecast at 4% in 2011, but much will depend on continued business and consumer confidence in the economic recovery. In 2010, consumer spending remained strong, as evidenced by strong demand for Apple's iPad. Loan advances continued to grow strongly into May, while imports also increased.
The IT market will be supported by initiatives encouraging the integration of Hong Kong's economy with mainland China and the abolition of taxes on cross-border trade. Recent integration of PCs with wireless networking technologies, as well as the rollout of 3G mobile networks and popular converged services such as internet protocol television (IPTV), are also drivers.

A DAY IN LIFE ON FOB GERONIMO.
HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan -- The following information was released by the U.S. Marine Corps:
People have the ability to adapt to their surroundings. Proof of this can be observed in the habitat of the Marines here.
It's been several months since Marines with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, first arrived here, and even though operations continue 24 hours a day, life for the Marines here is a little more than just work and sleep.
"Life for me is pretty much post, QRF (quick reaction force) and sleep," said Lance Cpl. James Pursley, a guard force Marine. But the Bostic, N.C., native also added that while the FOB may seem meager in comparison to some of the larger, more-established bases in country, the Marines here have everything they need. Their base includes a chow hall, field-expedient bathrooms, showers and even a Morale, Welfare and Recreation tent with internet and phone access.
The MWR tent is also the chaplain's tent, where Marines can go and get personal items they are running low on, such as razor blades, shaving cream, soap and snacks. Also, they have a movie night there every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Caldera, a religious program specialist, said, "We are here to do as much for the Marines as we can." He added that the MWR/chaplain's tent offers many different services and they also have snacks and coffee for the Marines.
"The only things I could do without are the sand storms," added a smiling Pursley. The flat desert terrain is a prime environment for the dust devils that blow through camp almost daily in the summer and are still common during the other seasons.
The Marines here continue the tradition of "practice like you play" by training in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, helping them to prepare for combat. They also have a gym with free weights to give them more to do than just pull-ups and running for physical training.
"Life on Geronimo is actually pretty good," said field wireman Lance Cpl. Eric Fisher.
So, while these Marines may be half a world away from home, they have adapted to their situation and have done what they can to bring a little bit of normalcy to being deployed in a war zone.

The unstoppable response to the demo and amazing pre-orders confirm that "MDK" is unquestionably one of the most anticipated games of the year.
"MDK" was developed by Shiny Entertainment, the developers responsible for the console platform smash hit "Earthworm Jim."
A Sony PlayStation version of "MDK" is scheduled for release in July.

Morningstar Introduces New Investor Return Data to Capture How the Average Investor Fared in a Fund over a Period of Time.
CHICAGO, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Morningstar, Inc. , a leading provider of independent investment research, today announced it is providing new data for open-end mutual funds and exchange- traded funds to capture how the average investor fared in a fund over a period of time. The new measure, called Morningstar(R) Investor Return(TM), estimates the return earned collectively by all the investors in a fund. Investor return, also known as dollar-weighted return, accounts for all cash inflows and outflows from purchases and sales and the growth in fund assets. It complements the more traditional metric of total return, which measures what investors could have earned had they bought and held the fund, reinvesting all dividends, over a period of time.
"Investors know they should hold diversified portfolios, but many chase past performance and end up buying funds too late or selling too soon," said Don Phillips, managing director of Morningstar. "For example, if most investors bought a fund at a high point and sold in a trough, that fund's investor return would be lower than its total return. Similarly, a fund's investor return might be higher than its total return if investors, in aggregate, timed their purchases and sales astutely. In essence, investor return shows how well-or how poorly- investors in a fund have fared."
Investor return is an internal rate of return calculation that places greater emphasis on periods in which fund assets are larger. Morningstar now calculates one-, three-, five-, and 10-year trailing and annual investor returns for open-end mutual funds and exchange-traded funds based in the United States.
"Fund companies don't have complete control over how investors use their funds, but that doesn't mean they can't exercise any control," Phillips said. "Fund companies can influence investor behavior through fund design, the timing of launches and closings, marketing efforts, and shareholder communications. With access to investor returns, investors and advisors can determine which fund companies are successfully deploying strategies that result in a better outcome for investors."
Morningstar is rolling out investor return data in the following products this month: Morningstar Direct(SM), Morningstar(R) Advisor Workstation, Morningstar(R) Principia(R), and Morningstar(R) Licensed Data. Individual investors will be able to access the new data in early November on Morningstar.com, the company's investment Web site.

CHECK ALL YOUR FACTS.(Stars)(Column)
Byline: Sheila Byrnes Contributing writer
Briefly recently, I imagined myself being related to renowned artist Grandma Moses, not because I've suddenly discovered I can paint, but because I discovered she and my ancestors share a common name - Richardson.
Here's the story: In Brendan Gill's book "Late Bloomers, 75 Remarkable People Who Found Fame, Success and Joy in the Second Half of Their Lives," he writes: "Anna Mary Richardson was born in a small town in upstate New York."
I have Richardson ancestors born in upstate New York.
I Googled "Anna Mary Richardson." The response showed an Anna Mary Richardson born in New Jersey, not New York. I then searched for "Grandma Moses." She was born Sept. 7, 1860, in Greenwich, Washington County, one of 10 children of Mary and Russell King Robertson, not Richardson.
When I put "Anna Mary Robertson" in Google, one link showed "Anna Mary Robertson aka Grandma Moses" and another showed her living in North Easton, Washington County.
I checked the 1870 Federal Census for North Easton and found an Anna M., 9, living in the household of a Robertson family. Anna is the right age living in the right area.
The 1930 Federal Census for White Creek, Washington County, lists an Anna M. Moses, 67, with no occupation. She began painting when she was in her 70s.
Gill was a writer for the New Yorker magazine for more than 60 years. I tried to contact him to verify his sources, but another Internet search showed he died Dec. 27, 1997.
Although I could not contact Gill's sources, my research proved the information in "Late Bloomers" is incorrect.
And I determined I have no famous connection to Grandma Moses.
I also verified, yet again, the importance of checking the information that we gather from others.

Upscale, Unemployed Business People Meet Weekly for Buffalo, N.Y., Lunch.
Byline: Jay Rey
May 13--Lunch is at noon each Tuesday for these bright Buffalo business minds who meet to talk shop.
They're an assorted bunch -- company officers, project directors, managers, computer gurus, you name it. But these days, they share a common bond: Once making somewhere from $45,000 to more than $100,000 a year at local companies, they're now out of work.
"When you are looking for a job, you have to network everywhere," Jill Benker-Beck, the group's leader and motivator, tells them on a recent Tuesday. "Think about your church, your schools, your car mechanic, your hair dresser, anyone you talk to. It's out there. You just have to shake a lot of trees to get the fruit."
Meet the POD people -- Professional Opportunity Developers, that is.
Each Tuesday since January, this group -- a few dozen people and growing -- meets for a brown-bag lunch at the Buffalo Employment and Training Center on Goodell Street. Think: Networking club meets support group for unemployed bosses.
Members dispense job-hunting advice, swap war stories, offer some solace in Buffalo's tough job market and, most importantly, tip others in the group to job openings out of their personal expertise. They also take part because they want to stay in Western New York.
"There was a business analyst position in the paper over the weekend, did you see it?" one member asked a group newcomer.
He had, but thanks anyway.
"Have you talked to Mattel?" someone else asked another newcomer looking for a job in the information technology field.
He rummages through a stack of business cards, finds one and passes over the fresh job lead.
POD is the brainchild of Beck, career resource center manager at the Buffalo Employment and Training Center.
She went to a luncheon a while back to welcome a new company officer recruited to the area, but with so many quality professionals out of work in Western New York, she wondered why the position couldn't have been filled by a local.
POD was born.
The group, Beck said, is geared toward out-of-work executives and managers who earned at least $45,000. Those jobs are hard to come by in this region, she said, but pulling together unemployed professionals from a variety of fields each week has helped expand their contacts and open doors.
And it's showing local companies the available pool of local talent. Since January, about 53 have joined the Tuesday lunches; 20 of them now have jobs.
"They've become like a little family in a way, looking out for each other," said James Finamore, director of the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Investment Board. "And boy, it seems to be working."
The lunches are informal, but organized, taking on an almost boardroom feel.
On one recent Tuesday, a group of 18 -- 13 men, five women -- filed into a large basement room in the Goodell Street building carrying their sandwiches and salads, some toting brief cases or laptops. They took seats behind long tables arranged in a rectangle, name cards -- Paula, Ted, Mary, Gary -- in front of them.
Lunch opened with good news: One of the group members just got a job.
"He would be here telling you today, but he got a call on Thursday," Beck said. "His start day was yesterday. He's really excited. Yea, Dan."
Most here are in their mid-30s to early 50s. Some are wearing business suits, or shirt and tie. They're marketers and accountants, engineers and human resources managers with 10, 20 even 30 years experience in their fields. Most of their jobs were eliminated during a corporate downsizing.
"Who's had an interview this week?" Beck asks.
One woman raises her hand and shares her experience.
"I'm not sure it was the right position for me," she concluded. "But it feels good someone was interested."
For many, job searching these days is a brave new world. The Internet has become a job-hunter's best friend; voice mail many times the enemy. And carrying a cell phone could mean the difference between getting a job and not.
So, the group dispenses nuggets of job-hunting wisdom, like getting an employer's attention by sending resumes in oversize envelopes via Federal Express.
Some pass on little mottos to bolster moral.
"It's a full-time job getting a job," they say.
"You have to network to get work," the group is reminded.
While the fledgling group has had success, two-thirds of those who have latched onto a local job have had to settle for less than what they wanted or had been making, Beck said.
"Right now, employers really have you because people really want to stay in the area and are willing to come down in salary to stay here," said Andy Levine, who's been with the group two months.
Levine didn't want to come here when he took a job as a packinging engineer with Fisher-Price in 1978. Now, he doesn't want to leave. They're all in POD because they hate to leave.
"It's a real challenge," said Levine, 55, of Williamsville, who lost his job of six years at Carborundum Co. last November. "A majority of times no one's going to call you back. You try to keep a positive attitude. You try not to look behind you. You try not to look too far forward in the future. You're going by blind faith."
It's humbling.
"It's a feeling of not belonging, not having a foundation," Levine said. "You're probably not sleeping. Whenever the phone rings you hope it's about a job. It hurts your savings. Sometimes you'll have friends avoiding you."
But one of the benefits of the Tuesday lunches is commiserating with people who know what you're going through.
"We all kind of keep each other up," said Francine Shea, 34, from Hamburg, who lost her job as human resource manager after a company downsizing. "It's encouraging to hear people share their success stories."
Beck likes to tell the story of a recent POD alumnus who came into a meeting one week dejected about her employment prospects. The group lifted her spirits a bit. But the good news came when her cell phone rang during the meeting -- a job offer from a local bank.
She started work days later.
