SEOUL, Nov 4 Asia Pulse - South Korea's Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-je launched a campaign in Hong Kong Tuesday aimed at attracting foreign investment as part of the government's efforts to help the country's high-tech firms.
During the one-day investor road show, Chin briefed the audience, which included UBS Investment Bank, Goldman Sachs LLC, and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. Ltd., on the value of South Korea's information and telecommunications expertise, ministry officials said.
The minister also spelled out the government's mid-term plan to build an ultra high-speed broadband Internet network capable of transferring data 10-20 times faster than current high-speed connections, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry did not divulge how much it expected to raise during the road show.
Minister Chin will meet with Richard Li, chairman of Hong Kong's biggest telecommunication firm Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. (PCCW) and the son of Asia's most powerful business tycoon Li Ka-shing, to ask the company to invest in Korea's multimedia software and online gaming firms.
Chief financial officers and top executives from nine Korean companies including KT Corp., KTF Co., SK Telecom Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. accompanied Chin on the visit.
Before taking up the ministerial post last March, Chin had served in various positions at Samsung Electronics since 1985 and also held research posts at IBM Corp. and HP Co.
Chin will make a visit to Vietnam Wednesday to officiate at the opening of a high-tech training facility funded by the Korean government.
