LAWRENCE, KS -- The following information was released by the University of Kansas:
Kansas Public Radio's "Retro Cocktail Hour" will present another night of live music on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Pachamama's in downtown Lawrence, when trumpeter Stan Kessler and his band Television take audiences on a jazzy musical tribute into TV land.
Attendees will hear some of the wacky and wonderful TV tunes of the 1950s and '60s, including themes from "Leave it to Beaver," "Star Trek," "Dragnet," "Rocky and Bullwinkle" and "The Flintstones."
Tickets are $10 and on sale at KPR's website. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for appetizers and cocktails from the Pachamama's menu. Show starts at 8 p.m.
Television plays new jazz arrangements of archetypal television themes. The melodies are intact, but the themes have been reharmonized and placed in different rhythmic contexts. Styles run the gamut, from swing to funk to Latin, even ballads. Often funny, always irreverent, these tunes show off the depth of the bands' talent and versatility. Audiences are sure to be entertained when they recognize favorite themes placed in a different musical environment.
Bandleader Stan Kessler plays the trumpet and flugelhorn. The other Television players are Roger Wilder on keyboards, Jeff Harshbarger on bass and Tim Cambron on drums.
Over the course of their careers, members of Television have played with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Clark Terry, Karrin Allyson, Kevin Mahogany, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Dave Brubeck.
KPR, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on 91.5 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison and 99.5 FM and 98.3 FM in Manhattan.
